We are so glad you've offered to lead our worship at Seven Kings United Free Church!
Our morning service is at 10:45am and usually lasts around an hour. If you expect to be longer do let the Sunday School staff know so they can keep the children occupied.
We are a friendly and flexible congregation, with a variable
number of children in the service, but rarely fewer than 5, often up to
25.
The early part of our service is geared to worship and
thinking together, often with a talk geared towards the younger children,
but not always – sometimes we simply enjoy worshiping all together.
In separate files you will find ‘default’ orders of service
for the different kinds of service you may be asked to lead. There is ‘Morning
Worship’ (first fourth & fifth Sundays), ‘Parade’
service on the second Sunday in each month and ‘Morning
worship with communion’ on the third Sunday in each month.
We chose the title ‘default’ rather than
‘normal’ or
‘standard’ because it is only a starting point for
planning. What we do if we are not doing something else. We really
mean it when we say ‘please feel free to alter it’, and
appreciate variety.
All we ask is that you tell us what to do next as we go through.
In Windows 98, if you click on the links below you should be able to view the order in Internet Explorer 5 or above, but you may prefer to right click on the link, and choose ‘save target as’ which will allow you to download the order as a Microsoft Word Document you can edit and use for your preparation. In Windows XP you should be offered the option to open (view) or save to disk (download) without you having to do anything special. If you've shelled out on Windows Vista I gather it shoudl work in the same as as XP only prettier :-)
People chat and settle in before the service, and the start of the service is heralded by the Bible being brought in, at which point people stand. The preacher enters, & people sit down while he/she prays & then follow the lead from there.
We have a radio microphone for the main speaker and a lectern mike for readers, notices etc. Please do use the microphones as they provide the feed for the hearing loop and the recordings (for the housebound) even if the majority of the congregation could hear you without it.
During the 'all together' part of the worship, often after the children's talk we ask if there have been any birthdays in the last week or if someone's got one coming up this week. There's a tin on the shelf in the reading desk for them to choose a small gift and then we sing happy birthday to them.At the point when the children go to their own sessions we ask our preacher to pray for them and for the adults in a short prayer ending with "The Lord be with you" to which the congregation reply "and also with you".
During the Parade service only the smallest children go out and the whole service is geared towards all age worship inclusive of 7 and upwards. Many of the girls are from Asian families and of Muslim or Hindu upbringing. They love to hear about Jesus but we do not assume as much ‘background knowledge’ as children brought up within the church. Parade services tend to have the input split into three shorter parts, but please feel free to use any format that engages young people.
At Communion two servers will join you at the table. We're used to one prayer for bread and wine, lead either by the preacher or a server (often the one on the right, but just check with them as they sit down). Again we are used to variety so please feel free to lead us to celebrate in a different format – you lead, we'll follow. We are familiar with ‘The Peace’ should you wish to include it.
We have a variety of song / hymn books available; the 1962 Baptist Hymn Book, The URC ‘Rejoice and Sing’ (1991) Songs of Fellowship 1-3 and a CLC license to use anything else. Hopefully the songs will be on the video projector (assuming not all the techies are away at once :-) ). We use Easy Worship which allows for DVD clips etc to be cued as part of the running order, and there is a second computer input on the projector if you prefer to take control at the front for any part of the service (eg to operate powerpoint yourself.). A ‘D.I.’ box should be available for you to plug your computer into the sound system. It is also possible to give us a powerpoint presentation on USB key or CD to be operated from the back, (we have a remote you can use, or bring your own). We can also easily play CDs mp3s etc etc. There is a VHS video player (remember them?) available by prior arrangement. The level of technical wizardry available may depend upon who is there on any given Sunday. Please phone to ask. You are welcome to bring your own equipment should you prefer.
Our Musicians are Phyllis Teager 020 8590 0737, and Martin
Pringle 020 8599 7265. They like to have your choices by Thursday evening
if you can. Francesca or Phyllis will be able to tell you which one is
playing on your visit. Songs are played on the organ or MIDI Player as
appropriate. (Many settings in Songs of Fellowship were never intended
for an organ). If you are interested to know which songs we have on MIDI
and those we know particularly well there is a list here.
We know most of the popular hymns that have stood the test of time, and
often use a balance of old and new music in worship.
Any further questions feel free to contact our church secretary (Francesca Fenn 020 8924 9370) or our minister (Brian Davison 020 8590 3288 – although of course you may be coming because he's not around)
Directions for travel can be found elsewhere on our web site (How to find us), and do please feel free to browse the rest of the site and get to know a bit more about us.
